Paris wants to reopen Notre Dame Cathedral, which was damaged by a 2019 fire, to the public by the end of 2024.
In Paris, the renovation of the Notre Dame Cathedral is progressing at a good pace, and the building, one of the city’s most famous sights, is slowly regaining its iconic appearance.
Notre Dame was badly damaged in 2019 in a fire that started from the roof structures of the cathedral.
Paris will hold the Summer Olympics in June-August of next year, and the city wants to have Notre Dame look like it used to be, at least ready for the competition tourists by the summer.
– I hope that by the time of the Olympics, the large roof of the cathedral and the tower above it will be back, said the person responsible for the restoration Philippe Jost news agency AFP yesterday Thursday.
According to Jost, Notre Dame’s approximately one-hundred-meter tower will slowly rise above the roof from the end of this year.
Parts of the opening ceremony of the Summer Olympics are planned to be held on the Seine River, which runs through the center of Paris. Notre Dame, completed in the 14th century, is located along the Seine on the island of Île de la Cité.
– At that time, everyone will see that we are already very close to the opening, Jost promises.
Jost was given the task of finishing the restoration of Notre Dame in August, after previously being responsible for the restoration By Jean-Louis Georgelin died accidentally on an alpine hike. Jost says the workers want to honor Goergelin’s memory by completing the restoration on schedule.
Jost says there is still scaffolding inside the cathedral, but otherwise the interior has largely been cleaned and restored from the fire damage.
Paris’ goal is to reopen Notre Dame to the public by the end of 2024. The price of the restoration of the cathedral is estimated rising to around 700 million euros.
