On the occasion of its reopening, a timeless journey in 3D audio to the heart of the most famous cathedral in France. From recordings made in 2013, in the daily life of Notre-Dame de Paris, just before it was invented or reinvented…
Sunday December 8, 2024, tens of thousands of people are expected in Paris, on the square in front of Notre-Dame Cathedral, for a reopening to the public, with great fanfare, after five years of titanic work, following the tragic fire which, in 2019, ravaged the building and stunned the world.
Certainly, the monument has now had a facelift, revealing inside an unsuspected blondness of its stone, new liturgical furniture or dazzling wall paintings; but Notre-Dame de Paris finds, above all, on this weekend of celebration, its primary vocation: that of being both a fascinating book of stone and French history, but also a living Catholic place of worship, particularly visited .
Before the fire, the cathedral located on the Île de la Cité, in the heart of historic Paris, was the most visited monument in the country, even in Europe, with 12 million visitors per year. Today, after its official reopening, more than 15 million visitors are expected.
So, at the very moment when the world is about to discover the new Notre-Dame, we offer you a 3D audio sound photograph of its daily life, as we recorded it in 2013; from the square crowded with tourists to the sacristy, via its nave or its two towers to the fantastic bestiary, for a journey through time: that of cathedrals.
A production to listen to on headphones with Labo RFI.
