Notice for those who still have old smartphones: WhatsApp will no longer work on certain models from January 2023. Like every year, the messaging application stops supporting older operating systems.
The oldest smartphones will soon no longer be able to run WhatsApp! Indeed, like every year, an update will make instant messaging incompatible with certain operating systems from 1er January 2023. This decision by Meta is due to technical and security reasons. “To keep pace with the latest technological advancements, we regularly stop supporting older operating systems to devote our resources to supporting the latest systems.“explains WhatsApp on his website.
What operating systems will WhatsApp support in 2023?
In practice, like almost all application publishers, Meta will therefore abandon very old operating systems for the next versions of WhatsApp. To operate future versions of the instant messaging application, you will now need to have a smartphone with at least Android 4.1 (nicknamed Jelly Beam) or iOS 12. Nothing indecent in reality: because the earlier versions are really starting to date. Android 4.0.x (Ice Cream Sandwich) was released in October 2011 and evolved until March 2012. In other words, an eternity! There is therefore little chance that many people will still be equipped with a mobile with Android 4.0 today… It is slightly more delicate in the Apple world. Indeed, iOS 11 was released in September 2017 and evolved until July 2018, before the arrival of IOS 12. Given the longevity of iPhones, it is likely that some are still in circulation at this time.
Let things be clear, however: it is to take advantage of updates and future WhatsApp functions that you will need to use at least iOS 12 or Android 4.1. The application will simply refuse to install on mobiles with older operating systems. But it will continue to work if it is already installed: simply certain functions may not be accessible.
Which smartphones are incompatible with WhatsApp in 2023?
Meta has listed the most common smartphones that will no longer be able to run WhatsApp from 1er January 2023. It has 49 devices, listed here in alphabetical order. Note that only popular “big brands” are taken into account: models from more exotic manufacturers, notably Chinese, are not listed. It is then necessary to stick to the version of Android that they can accept, Apple not being concerned.
