When you ask the Germans, which is the biggest problem in society, immigration is often mentioned.
Before the election for the Bundestag, however, there are other issues that determine how citizens will vote: peace and security, business and economy as well as social justice. This according to a voter barometer from the German The TV company ZDF.
– The gaps in society, which are making themselves more and more noticeable to many, who have made it tougher to get life and everyday life together, says SVT’s European correspondent Christoffer Wendick in the morning studio.
Immigration first comes in fourth place (with 26 percent), when voters were asked about which questions are most important for their choice.
“A powerlessness”
According to Christoffer Wendick, the political climate in Germany is currently characterized by a sense of great disappointment, over the silence of recent years.
Many also feel a concern about the influence of the immigration -hostile party AfD, alternatives for Germany, may have. The party has sailed in the electoral movement as a strong second, with 20 percent in opinion polls, according to the latest weighting of the newspaper Der Spiegel.
– And then also a powerlessness, that even if you go and vote, it may not give a result that will give any major change, says Wendick.
