not Prime Minister, what future?

not Prime Minister what future

MELENCHON. After welcoming the results of the Nupes in the second round of the legislative elections, Jean-Luc Mélenchon left the vagueness on his political future, he who had not presented himself personally for these legislative elections and will therefore not sit in the National Assembly. .

[Mis à jour le 20 juin 2022 à 14h55] Missed bet for Jean-Luc Mélenchon! The election night of the 2nd round of legislative elections turned into half-hearted success for the leader of La France Insoumise. If the Nupes, the left-wing alliance he had called for, obtains a very good score with 131 deputies including probably about 75 from his party La France Insoumise (LFI), the former presidential candidate did not manage to win the majority, even relative, leaving it to the alliance Together! around Emmanuel Macron, who will however not have an absolute majority in the National Assembly either (245 seats when it took 289 to claim this majority).

As a result, Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s dream of becoming Prime Minister naturally died out. The one who was Minister Delegate for Vocational Education from 2000 to 2002 in Lionel Jospin’s government in full cohabitation will probably not find a minister’s portfolio. In his speech Sunday, June 19 in the evening, Jean-Luc Mélenchon has also left the blur on his personal future. Unlike 2017, the LFI leader did not present himself personally in these legislative elections, leaving the hand to the new generation of Insoumis. He had thus passed the baton to Manuel Bompard in Marseille, the latter being largely elected in the 4th constituency of the Bouches du Rhône that Mélenchon had conquered in 2017.

Not a minister, not a deputy and therefore even less president of the LFI group in the National Assembly as he had been during Emmanuel Macron’s first five-year term, what will become of Jean-Luc Mélenchon? “As for me, I am changing my combat post. My commitment will remain, until my last breath, in the first of your ranks if you want it”, he slipped by way of conclusion to his speech. election night, leaving its faithful in expectation. “The rout of the presidential party is total”, he had previously judged before announcing: “My message this evening is a message of combat” (…). “All the possibilities are in your hands. The great spurt of history from the depths of what France is (…) has a face, the face of our collective, that of the Popular Union.” Before warning: “Not for a moment will we give up governing this country”. “France is a political nation despite what the abstention says”.

The four main parties making up the Nupes alliance had agreed on more than 650 common programmatic proposals. This program had as its base that of Jean-Luc Mélenchon and the Popular Union for the 2022 presidential election, entitled The common future. Among the common proposals of the Nupes, we find the increase of the Smic to 1500€, the reduction of the legal age of retirement to 60 years, the establishment of an “ecological planning”, or the creation of an “autonomy allowance” for young people. The program of the Nupes also indicates the points of divergence existing between the various formations, “which will be put to the wisdom of the Assembly”.

Jean-Luc Mélenchon took 3rd place in the 1st round of the 2022 presidential election. With 21.95% of the votes cast, he failed 1.2 points behind Marine Le Pen and the second round. He thus improved his result compared to the 1st round of 2017, where he came in 4th position behind François Fillon, with 19.58% of the vote. It was Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s 3rd presidential election: in 2012, he had already come 4th in the 1st round, but with only 11.1% of the vote, far behind François Hollande (28.63).
