Not just ugly but boring

One of the probably worst superhero movies of all time is Max Steel from 2016, based on a toy line from Mattel. But while Barbie from the same company enjoyed huge success, director Stewart Hendler’s film failed at the box office and was panned by critics.

The film only gets one on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes Critic rating of 0 percent. The review from Cinema Crazed stated there says: “[Der Film] “It’s not just ugly, it’s boring, which is a shame considering the concept at least has potential.”

Superhero Max Steel: Who is he anyway?

In the film, teenager Max McGrath (Ben Winchell) moves to a new city and develops so-called turbo powers that he can barely control. Shortly before the situation escalates, he receives help from the living alien suit named Steel, with whom Max quickly connects. So he finally gets his abilities under control and is prepared for the dark force that threatens humanity shortly afterwards.

In addition to the film version, there are also several animated versions of Max Steel. A medium that probably does the material better than the decried live-action version.

Max Steel: A maximum super flop

Max Steel’s production has always been ill-fated. Since 2009, attempts have been made to get the superhero project off the ground, only to completely replace the creative team again in 2014. An effort that was hardly worth it: Internationally, the film grossed just $4.6 million (according to The Numbers) – and that was against a budget of around $10 million.

The film fares a little better in the Moviepilot community. Here the film at least achieved a rating of 4.5. If you want to see for yourself, you can find Max Steel streaming on Netflix.
