COVID. The peak of contamination linked to the Covid-19 epidemic in France should be reached in a few days. The Minister of Health indicated this Wednesday, January 12 that it is possible that the peak is followed plateau, which would be deleterious.
- This Wednesday, January 12, 2022, the Covid-19 epidemic in France is circulating very actively. 370,000 new contaminations were detected in 24 hours, according to the latest figures from Public Health France. This Wednesday, on France Info, the Minister of Health considered that the figures were partial: “When we make 370,000 diagnoses on a given day, we can consider that there are perhaps not far from a million – or a little less – who contract it “. The detailed report can be found on this page, updated every day, devoted to the Covid figures in France.
- The director of the ANRS, Yazdan Yazdanpanah, expressed his concerns on France 2 this morning. “For a month, we can expect a difficult situation in hospitals. Around the second half of January, the peak of contamination will be reached, the peak of hospitalizations is expected in early February. […] If we didn’t have a vaccine, we would be completely overwhelmed. “
- The Minister of Health also alerted to the situation at the hospital. “25,000 patients in the hospital, that’s a lot. The hospital load is rising, the duration of treatment is shorter, there are home follow-ups to relieve the hospital, we are monitoring this situation like milk. on the fire”. Olivier Véran, however, wanted to be optimistic: “It seems that the hospitalization curve is less steep than what one might have feared, in view of what happened in England for example”.
- The booster vaccination is progressing at a steady pace. “We are almost one hundred percent for those over 65 who were due to recall in mid-December. And for those over 65 who are three months away from their last injection, we are at nearly 90%” , said the minister.
- The vaccine pass bill is still being examined this Wednesday in the Senate Chamber. The government intends to implement this new pass in the week of January 17.

09:13 – The minister evokes the disappearance of the health pass under conditions
“When the health emergency is no longer obvious, the vaccination pass will disappear. It will be limited in time anyway, the law requires us to do so”, clarified this morning Olivier Véran, aware that the opposition has made of this conditionality an imperative point. “The vaccination pass goes hand in hand with the health emergency,” he said.
09:10 – “We could expect to be on a peak shape soon”, says Véran
“The Omicron variant has circulated a lot. If we follow the curves observed in certain countries which precede us, we could expect to be soon on a peak shape. A peak or a plateau? I cannot tell you yet” , added the Minister of Health on France Info. If the epidemic remains on a plateau, then the number of cases of contamination will drop only very slowly, which would be very bad news for hospitals, which will have to face an overload of certain services for long weeks.
09:04 – Olivier Véran: “There are perhaps close to a million” new patients a day
This Wednesday, on the antenna of France Info, the Minister of Health took stock of the level of circulation of the disease, remaining masked on the set. “When we make 370,000 diagnoses on a given day, we can consider that there are perhaps close to a million – or a little less anyway because we test a lot – of French people who contract it”, a insisted the minister. “Some scientists say we are at over 500,000 new cases per day anyway.” But the minister insists that “the micron variant is too contagious for it not to circulate. The restriction and containment measures have no impact on its circulation. But the variant is not allowed to circulate” , he said, adding: “The key indicator that we are monitoring is the rise in the cost of hospitalizations”.

According to last epidemiological point of Public Health France (SPF), published Thursday, January 6, France is facing an “extremely marked acceleration in the circulation of SARS-CoV-2 linked to the very rapid progression of the Omicron variant and increase in new hospitalizations”. On average, the incidence rate was 1,908 positive cases per 100,000 population nationwide.
- In metropolitan France, the incidence rate corrected increases in week 52 and passes to 1,908 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants (vs. 835 in W51, or + 129%), “or nearly 2% of the population tested positive in W52”. The incidence rate has, in W52, “at least doubled in all age groups,” notes the public health agency. In particular, it has tripled among 70-79 year olds (771 positive cases per 100K inhabitants, i.e. + 207% compared to W51) and 80-89 year olds (622, + 212%) compared to the previous week. It was 3,606 (+ 103%) among 20-29 year olds and 2,905 (+ 112%) among 30-39 year olds.
- The number of new cases diagnosed per day also increases sharply. On average, in W52, more than 168,000 positive cases were detected each day. The effective reproduction rate of the virus was 1.61 on January 1 (compared to 1.22 on December 25, 2021), “indicating a marked acceleration of viral circulation”, notes SPF. The positivity rate for the tests was also on the rise (17.1%, vs 8.7% in W51, or +8.4 points).
- The number of new hospitalizations is also increasing sharply. The indicators by date of admission showed 9,982 new hospitalizations in W52 (compared to 8,439 in W51, or + 18%) and 1,822 new admissions to critical care services.
- The Omicron variant of the coronavirus is now the majority in France, identified at 74% of the tests by sequencing, whereas it represented only 49% in week 51.
- Vaccination against Covid-19 is still progressing: As of January 4, 2022, vaccination coverage from anti-Covid vaccine was estimated at 77.2% of the population for at least one dose. 48.4% of those aged 18 and over had, by that date, received a booster dose (59.4% among eligible audiences). Among those aged 65 and over, 72.9% had received a booster dose (82.4% among those eligible).

Since mid-October 2020, Public Health France has been communicating incidence data (number of cases per 100,000 inhabitants) at the municipal level. The figures are at this stage communicated according to a scale (10, 20, 50, 150, 250, 500, 1000 cases per 100,000 inhabitants). The data are expressed on a rolling week, which means that they are calculated on a day D from the tests carried out between 3 and 9 days previously. As a reminder, the incidence rate corresponds to the number of new cases of Covid-19 over a period of one week, compared to the total population of a territory (country, region, department or municipality). This indicator is generally expressed in number of cases per 100,000 inhabitants. The screening rate gives the number of people who have tested for the coronavirus out of the total number of inhabitants, during the period. It is also expressed most often on 100,000 inhabitants. Finally, the test positivity rate gives the percentage of positive tests for the coronavirus, compared to the total number of tests carried out over the period.
