Ingemar Stenmark impressed everyone during the veteran WC.
Even in our neighboring country Norway, people are shocked by “Stenis”.
– It is really bad style that he is so fit, says Olympic hero Kjetil André Aamodt to NRK.
It started mostly as a fun hobby last year when Ingemar Stenmark took up a brand new sport and started practicing pole vaulting. But the better he got at it, the interest grew even more and recently the 68-year-old made his debut at the Veterans World Cup.
Stenmark’s success
“Stenis” attracted large crowds to the competition in Gothenburg and made a big impression in Slottsskogsvallen. The alpine skiing icon cleared three meters in the pole vault and broke a new season’s best.
– Great fun! I’m glad I went here. The best thing was the audience and the community among the jumpers, Stenmark said of his effort.

It was a tenth place for the 68-year-old and since then he has been praised by most. Countless people are so impressed by the gunpowder old man who takes on a brand new sport in the autumn of his age and performs clearly beyond expectations.
Norwegian shock
The success in the veteran WC has also reached all the way to neighboring Norway, where people are full of admiration for Ingemar Stenmark.
– He is simply unique and that is why, in my opinion, he is the best male alpine skier of all time. So it’s not very surprising, says the alpine Olympic gold medalist Kjetil André Aamodt to NRK.
– He is an old man and it is really bad style that he is so fit. It’s impressive that he keeps it up. If you stop at that age, the body rots, so this is good motivation.

Many have been surprised by how fit Ingemar Stenmark was during the veteran WC and the Norwegian pole vault coach Atle Guttormsenfather of the OS brothers Simen and Sondre Guttormsenparticularly noticed the Swede’s fine technique.
– I saw the first jumps he did, and he did surprisingly well. If you are going to jump over three meters at the age of 68, you have to be more than fit. He has learned something that is technically difficult and when he jumps it really looks like pole vaulting, he says.
