Norway and Amnesty demand Fifa to publish Qatar report

The report examines whether Fifa has done enough to compensate migrant workers for the human rights violations that occurred during the construction of stadiums.

President of the Norwegian Football Association Lise Klaveness demands the International Football Association Fifa to publish the results of the investigation into the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The report examined how Fifa implemented its own human rights policy in Qatar.

– We have not seen the report, but we know that it is extensive. It has been discussed by the Fifa board, but it has not been made public. We expect it to happen before the Fifa congress, Klaveness said recently according to the Norwegian newspaper VG.

The much-criticized soccer World Cup took place in Qatar. The country was criticized for trampling human rights as well as climate issues.

The Fifa Congress will be held in Bangkok on May 17. The report was decided at last year’s congress on Norway’s initiative. The report examines whether Fifa has done enough to compensate migrant workers for the human rights violations that occurred during the construction of stadiums.

Amnesty demands that change proposals be published in the report.

– I have to present guarantees that this kind of thing won’t happen again. The first step is to take responsibility for what happened in Qatar. The next step is risk analyses, which will ensure that the risks of human rights violations are significantly reduced in Fifa tournaments, Frank Conde Tangberg Amnesty Norway said.

According to Amnesty, FIFA received the results several months ago, but has not published them. Fifa’s response to the criticism is that the report is still being reviewed.

Klaveness says what he’s heard from the report is promising.

– I hope the report is as clear as possible, but at the same time so dynamic that it can be used when evaluating new games.

Saudi Arabia is the only applicant for the 2034 World Cup.
