Northvolt employees testify to culture of silence: “Nothing is allowed to come out”

After the explosion in early November, which caused one of the deaths sent, according to information to Expressen, an internal email in which employees at Northvolt were asked not to tell outsiders about what was happening at the factory.

When SVT talks to employees at the factory, some testify to a culture of silence within the company, which Expressen was the first to write about.

“None of what happens inside the factory can get out,” says an anonymous employee to SVT.

Employees do not dare to talk to SVT’s reporter

On Monday morning, SVT’s reporter goes out to the factory in Skellefteå to ask more employees if they can tell us how they feel after the accidents. But no one dares to say anything. Most people just keep walking.

– We don’t talk to the media, that’s our policy, says an employee on site.

Why don’t you want to talk to us?

– Well, you understand why. It’s about what Expressen wrote about, says another employee.

– We have press persons you can talk to, I don’t know what to say, says a third employee.

Northvolt: Fully allowed to talk about feelings

Northvolt themselves say that employees are free to talk to the press and outsiders to the extent they want.

When we ask them what they think about why many do not dare to tell about the event of the last few days, they say that it might have to do with people being affected after what has happened.

“It is perfectly permissible for an employee to talk about their feelings and their impressions of Northvolt with the press and in social media, and many of our colleagues have chosen to do so,” they write to SVT.

SVT has been in contact with representatives of IF Metall at Northvolt, who say that they are not aware of any culture of silence.
