Anyone who looked up at the sky during the first night of the year often had the chance to see more than just fireworks. SVT has received a large number of Northern Lights images from viewers, but above all in northern Sweden.
– There was a lot of cloud in southern Sweden, so there was no chance to see it there. There was still quite a large part of the country where it was overcast at midnight, says SVT’s meteorologist Tora Tomasdottir.
The night’s extensive northern lights are in line with how it has looked lately. The beginning of winter has been an intense period in the night sky with aurora sightings as far south as Skåne.
– We are in the middle of an aurora borealis period and for at least the rest of the winter you will have a good chance of seeing it. Then it will decrease slowly.
