On Boxing Day morning, South Korea said it had fired warning shots at a North Korean drone that had violated their airspace.
Anders Callert, who is head of delegation for the NNSC, whose job it is to monitor the armistice between South and North Korea, takes a serious view of the violation that may have taken place:
– If the investigation can establish that this drone really comes from North Korea and not South Korea, then it is a violation of the armistice agreement, he says.
First breach in 5 years
The Ministry of Defense also states that fighter jets and attack helicopters were sent to shoot down the drones. However, it leaves no information on whether the military managed to neutralize the drones.
It is the first time since 2017 that North Korean drones have entered South Korea. That time, a drone from the North crashed after, according to South Korea, it photographed an American military installation in the country.
