South Korea’s top military command says in a statement that it detected a test firing from a submarine near the North Korean port city of Sinpo.
North Korea, for its part, says it fired two.
The country previously communicated via the state news agency KCNA that it had decided to take “important practical” war deterrent measures, due to South Korea and the United States’ largest joint military exercise in five years.
Preparing for invasion
South Korea and the United States will begin the joint exercise “Freedom Shield” on Monday, the focus of which is the “changed security environment” as a result of North Korea’s increased aggression, the countries state.
Exercises such as the one now to be carried out infuriate North Korea, which sees them as preparations for an invasion of the country.
