Norrtåg rejects LKAB’s proposal for stopped passenger traffic on the Malmbanan: “Desperate”

The winter’s derailments on the Malmbanan caused a total of 76 24-day stoppages in the ore traffic towards Narvik.

Every day, LKAB lost SEK 100 million in revenue. And due to continued supply problems, the mining company has warned of notice.

  • – The situation is so serious that if we can’t run more ore trains, we have to stop even more operations and notify staff, said CEO Jan Moström.

    Norrtåg will not stop traffic

One proposal to solve the situation is to stop passenger traffic on the route. However, Norrtåg believes that it is needed for the communities in Norrbotten to live.

    – If the industries don’t have a society, they won’t be able to cope either, says CEO Joakim Berg.

But he agrees that the Malmbanan must be upgraded.

    – There is no time to sit still in the boat and wait. We must choose now: Decommissioning or development.
