“It was finished not long ago, so this is a good spot to feature it,” said Norfolk Councilor Mike Columbus on Dec. 23. “When we unveiled it tonight, it was red-and-green, perfect colors for Wellington Park at this time of year. It is beautiful.”

The LED sign is a mobile landmark, said Columbus, noting the heavy-duty double-axle flatbed trailer was built to accommodate it.
“This particular sign will be moved from festival to festival and it will be moved around to celebrate the various festivals in the county,” said Columbus. “So it will go to the Delhi Fall Fest, the Pumpkin Fest in Waterford, various events in Port Dover… and this was the perfect place to launch the first unveiling.”
It can also be pulled in parades.

“It’s a lot of work to put a float together and here’s one for us,” Columbus smiled.
“This could be used in parades – any kind of community events,” agreed Brandon Sloan, general manager, community development. “It’s going to be great.”
The idea for the large LED sign, which weighs 1,313 pounds, came from the Norfolk County Economic Development Department.
It represents the county’s commitment to innovation and community engagement, John Regan, director of Strategic Innovation and Economic Development, said in a media release.
“Our goal in creating the ‘NORFOLK’ sign was to craft something that is not just visually striking, but also emblematic of the spirit and energy of Norfolk County,” said Sloan in the release. “The unveiling at the Panorama is just the beginning of its journey.”

“I’m always happy to shine extra light on all the great things happening in Norfolk,” said Mayor Amy Martin in the release. “This sign is a great tool that symbolizes joy, unity and pride in our home that will help us promote community events but it’s especially an honor to unveil it at the Simcoe Panorama, one of Norfolk’s most cherished events.”
Following the 6 pm unveiling, Santa Claus walked over the holiday gazebo in the park for family ‘Santa Visits.’
“We’re excited for visitors to interact with the ‘NORFOLK’ sign, capturing moments and creating memories,” said Alice Smith, chair of the Panorama board in the release. “It’s a new icon that ties beautifully into the Panorama’s tradition of bringing people together in celebration of the season.”
Created by Banner Promotions, the $35,000 sign was drawn from the county’s capital budget.
