Norfolk OPP kept busy over Civic holiday long-weekend

Brantford man charged with theft

Norfolk OPP officers responded to a variety of calls and numerous collisions including one that was fatal over the Civic holiday long weekend.

Police responded to a collision involving a cyclist and a pick-up truck just after 7 am Aug. 6 at Windham Road 13 address. The cyclist died as a result of the collision and police are continuing to investigate.

In addition, officers laid more than 100 other charges over the long-weekend including 62 for speeding. Four drivers were charged with impaired driving and another was charged with stunt driving.

Officers also charged three motorists for not having insurance and laid one charge under the off-road vehicles act.

There were seven violations of the Canada Shipping Act – small vessel regulations, one other criminal code traffic-related charge and 30 provincial traffic-related charges.

Acting Insp. Jeff McNorgan, the detachment’s interim detachment commander said the Norfolk OPP’s marine unit was busy ensuring boaters were wearing life jackets or personal flotation devices. They also checked to ensure all boaters were qualified and had the required safety equipment on board.

“Our officers responded to a significant number of calls for service over the course of the Civic Day long weekend,” McNorgan said in a statement. “Although we achieved excellent results, members of the public still need to be reminded that operating a vehicle or vessel under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs should never be an option.

“Let’s continue to make safety a top priority on our roads, waterways and trails.”
