Finnish runner Nora Honkala won the ultra running race Spartathlon in extreme conditions.
The running distance of the competition from Athens to the city of Sparti was 246 kilometers, which Honkala covered in 24:25:08. With an extremely long running distance, the race was sometimes held in heat of up to 30 degrees, and numerous runners had to leave the race in the middle.
In 2014, Honkala, who ran through Spartathlon as the youngest woman in history, didn’t flinch from the hot conditions, but in the end pressed for an overwhelming victory on a journey where there was a good 3,360 meters of ascent.
Honkala arrived at the finish line accompanied by a police convoy and local runners. His name is engraved on the marble in front of the statue of Leonidas in Sparta.
