Nominations are open for the Brantford Accessibility Improvement Awards.

The City of Brantford, in partnership with the Brantford accessibility advisory committee, has launched the return of the awards, which recognize a person, group or organization that had made, or is in the process of making, a significant contribution toward improving accessibility for persons with disabilities.

“We want to recognize community members who are removing barriers to inclusion and ensuring the independence, dignity and equity of our citizens,” said Jenny Sawicki, Brantford’s accessibility coordinator. “These awards not only celebrate achievements in accessibility, but also inspire ongoing efforts to create a more inclusive and barrier-free environment for everyone in the community.”

Nominations must be received by Monday, March 18. Sawicki and members of the Brantford accessibility advisory committee will evaluate the nominations based on specific criteria available at Brantford.ca/AccessibilityAwards/ .

The award categories are:

  • Customer service: An organization, business and/or individual that demonstrates leadership in advancing access to transportation for persons with disabilities.
  • Transportation: An organization, business and/or individual that demonstrates leadership in advancing access to transportation for persons with disabilities.
  • Information and communication: An organization, business and/or individual that demonstrates leadership in providing information and communication supports to persons with disabilities.
  • Employment: An organization, business and/or individual that provides meaningful employment opportunities and demonstrates flexible and respectful integration of people with disabilities into their workforce.
  • Built environment: A building, interior, exterior or outdoor space designed or renovated to eliminate barriers and/or enhance access for persons with disabilities.

The award winners will be announced during National Accessibility Week, May 26 to June 1. Nomination forms can be found at Brantford.ca/AccessibilityAwards/
