Nominations are open for the 11th City of Sarnia accessibility awards.
The awards are hosted by the Sarnia accessibility advisory committee and recognize those who have “gone the extra mile to improve accessibility and awareness of people with disabilities,” the city said in a news release.
Awards are given in several categories.
They include awards for both large and small businesses for creating inclusive environments, an exceptional leadership in customer service award, creating opportunities for an accessible community award, exceptional accessible physical environment award and outstanding customer service in a social service sector award.
There is also a going above and beyond award recognizing a business or individual showing forward thinking assisting people with disabilities, and the recently created Kevin Shank legacy award recognizing individuals who inspire local residents to help make the city more inclusive and accessible.
Shank, a member of the advisory committee, died in 2022.
“Across our community there are those who step up, day after day, to improve the lives of individuals with a disability,” said Debbie Draganits, chairperson of the committee. “Their dedication to creating a safe and inclusive community deserves recognition.”
Nominations will be accepted until Nov. 3 online at www.sarnia.ca/AccessibilityAwards, by e-mail to [email protected], and by calling city’s the accessibility coordinator at 519-332-0330, ext. 3307.
