Nocturnal wave of theft of precious GPS systems

– It is mainly GPS systems from tractors that have been searched for, but there have also been thefts of other equipment and tools as well, says Joakim Wallberg, crime coordinator in police region East.

That it could be an international criminal network carrying out the thefts is one of the hypotheses the police are working on.

— Historically, when we look at cases like this, it’s usually about that. Partly because there are similar cases with similar modus operandi, and partly also because this type of equipment is difficult to sell in Sweden, you have to have a contact abroad to be able to sell on.

Apart from Östergötland, Roslagen and Skåne have also been affected by the thefts recently. Among other things in Höör, where GPS systems from excavators were stolen last week.

The police are now carrying out investigative work, with technical examination and trace protection.

— The investigation is low for this type of crime. It is difficult to secure traces, but we are working on it and on getting an idea of approaches and traces that we can tie to a person.
