Hideo Kojima presented a teaser trailer for his new game OD at the Game Awards 2023. Even though fans have absolutely no idea what’s actually going on, they are excited and are already speculating what could be behind the ominous trailer.
What does the trailer for OD show? At the beginning you can hear the cracking sound of a Geiger counter. Then it sounds like a door is being kicked in.
We then see the faces of three people in close-up. They all say the same cryptic sentence in different emotional states: “The hungry purple dinosaur ate the kind zingy fox, the jabbering crab, and the mad whale started vending and quacking“.
In German this means: The hungry purple dinosaur ate the friendly fox, the babbling crab, and the crazy whale started selling and chattering.
We are then shown one of the characters again, this time terrified. A door is reflected in the eyes and opens: the woman screams. Then the logo appears and the trailer ends.

How does the community react to the trailer? Fans are excited – even if they have absolutely no idea what’s actually going on.
This is how user Frankenmuppet sums it up perfectly under the teaser on YouTube: “As always when a Kojima production is teased, I have no idea what’s going on… And I’m 100% onboard.“
Not understanding Kojima’s trailers is more the rule than the exception. Even in the teaser for Death Stranding, the viewer was shown some surreal elements without having any context to classify them, so that they asked themselves: What the heck did I just see?
Although after watching Kojima’s teasers you still have absolutely no idea what the game is actually about, the trailer does something very important: it conveys a feeling.
In the case of OD, it is a slowly emerging discomfort that begins with the cracking of the Geiger counter and culminates with the woman’s scream.
In addition, this ignorance provides a lot of material for speculation. Because, as in the games, the devil is often hidden in the details in Kojima’s trailers.
This is also the case here at OD, where the reflections in the eyes reveal additional information and show, for example, how the door opens at the end and a shadowy figure becomes visible.
What could the trailer mean? The first speculations are already circulating under the trailer on YouTube about what Kojima wants to show us in his trailer.
For example, the user Sleazy Shell explains that the phrase used in the teaser represents a phonetic pangram, i.e. a sentence in which all letters of the alphabet appear. And explains further:
[…] This could mean that you can create a voiceprint. If you had a sample of these people’s voices with every possible sound, you could build a profile of what each word would sound like if they said it. This could perhaps be used to copy people’s voices or identify them.
Together with the chaotically overlapping voices in the background, it seems as if voice and sound are a central theme.
Below, another user speculates whether the woman might end up seeing a different version of herself and therefore screaming.
