The Iranian Narges Mohammadi, Nobel Peace Prize winner and incarcerated since November 2021, was released from prison on Wednesday for three weeks on medical grounds, her defense announced on suspended the execution of Narges Mohammadi’s sentence for three weeks”, indicated his lawyer, Me Mostafa Nili, specifying that the activist “was released from prison”.
Narges Mohammadi, 52, has been repeatedly convicted and imprisoned for 25 years for her commitment against compulsory veiling for women and against the death penalty. She spent much of the last decade in prison. “The reason for his release is his physical condition after the removal of a tumor and a bone graft, carried out 21 days ago,” stressed Mr. Nili. “The tumor removed was benign, but (Narges Mohammadi) must be examined every three months,” his lawyer said.
This three-week suspension is “insufficient”, reacted his relatives and supporters, demanding his “unconditional release” or “at least a three-month suspension”. “After a decade of imprisonment, Narges needs specialized medical care in a safe environment,” the Narges Mohammadi Foundation said in a statement.
New sentence in June
In June, the Iranian activist was sentenced to another year in prison for “propaganda against the state”. She had refused to attend the hearing of her trial after unsuccessfully requesting that it be open to the public.
In March, the activist broadcast an audio message from prison, in which she denounced a “large-scale war against women” in the Islamic Republic. In Iran, women have been required to respect a strict dress code requiring them to hide their hair in public places since the Islamic Revolution of 1979. Narges Mohammadi received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023, notably for his fight against death penalty.
She is incarcerated in Evin prison in Tehran. “The sanitary conditions in prison, the overcrowding in the women’s section with 75 inmates in the general section and 13 confined in their cells, her deficient immune system… have seriously harmed her state of health,” indicates the press release from her supporters .
