The election taking place on 20 December 2023 is the first election Denis Mukwege is running for.
“I’m not going to wait until 2028. I’m not doing it for interest or for power, but to save my homeland. Tomorrow is too late, I’m leaving now”, said during a press conference in connection with the announcement.
Denis Mukwege was awarded the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize together with Nadia Murad for his work against sexual violence in the troubled eastern parts of Congo-Kinshasa.
“Can be tough”
– It may be tough for him to win, even if he has strong support in the eastern parts of the country and the free churches. If he wins, he will be forced to take on a very corrupt system, says SVT’s Africa correspondent Johan Ripås.
