Sprint star Noah Lyles best known as an outstanding 200m runner. However, Lyles, who won the two previous world championships in the distance, proved on Sunday that he can also be the fastest in the world at 100 meters.
Known for his strong finish in the 200 meters, Lyles accelerated to his first 100 World Championship gold with a time of 9.83. For he sided with Britain by Zharnel Hughes the top time in the world statistics made earlier this year.
At the same time, Lyles continued the United States’ World Cup gold streak in the men’s 100 meters. Justin Gatlin won 2017, Christian Coleman 2019 and Fred Kerley 2022.
Before the dominance of the United States, Jamaica had dominated the men’s 100 at the World Cup four times in a row. Usain Bolt was able to do it in 2009, 2013 and 2015. Blake, on the other hand, in 2011.
Former men’s sprint powerhouse Jamaica has now missed out on a 100m medal three times in a row. The previous medal, bronze, was won by Usain Bolt in London 2017.
Jamaican 22 year old talent Oblique Seville was fourth in this year’s World Cup finals, just like last year. Silver was won by a youngster from Botswana Letsile Tebogo and bronze by Britain’s Hughes. The medals are their first personal victories at the adult level.
Double gold coming?
Lyles starts the 200 meters as an absolute early favorite. Lyles can become the first male runner at these World Championships since 2015 and Bolt, who has won double gold, i.e. the 100m and 200m distances.
– So far, it has gone really well. I already got the hardest part taken care of. One hundred meters is definitely the hardest to win. Now I have to enjoy and have fun on the journey that I love, Lyles commented to Urheilu on Sunday.
Bolt achieved that trick a record three times at the World Championship level. For once, the USA has also been able to do that Maurice Greene, Justin Gatlin mixed Tyson Gay.
Last year, the 26-year-old American, who finished third in the 200 meters all-time with a time of 19.32, went to the World Championships with wild goals.
Last week, he uploaded a post to Instagram in which he said that he ran 100 meters in Budapest in 9.65 and 200 meters in 19.10. Bolt’s 200m ME from 14 years ago is 19.19.
Fred Kerley, who defended the 100-meter World Championship gold, snapped at Lyles, who was on the spot in the preliminary press of the games.
– If Noah is going to run 9.65, I’ll run harder, Kerley quipped.
Lyles tossed Kerley a slashing receipt.
– That’s what they usually say before they are defeated.
Lyles couldn’t have been more right. Kerley was the first runner to miss the World Cup final.
Like Kerley, also the reigning Olympic champion, Italy Lamont Marcell Jacobs missed the semi-finals. However, one cannot speak of a big surprise, because Jacobs’ season has been very broken due to ailments.
