The lake used to be a meadow. In the thirties it became a lake after the sand under the meadow was used for the construction of the A2 motorway. Later still, part of the lake was filled with waste. The current hills of the cycling and ski track are actually mountains of waste. The owner of the dump, who was called De Put van Weber at the time, did not take laws and regulations very seriously. He allowed illegal waste to be dumped on a large scale. This included barrels with unknown toxic contents, cars and slightly radioactive hospital waste.
