After a slow start in January, construction in Brant County has picked up.
By the end of May, the county had issued 434 building permits valued at $88.2 million, compared to 396 worth $56.2 million issued in the first five months of last year.
“The two years were relatively similar for the first four months,” said Brant chief building inspector Richard Weidhaas. “Then, in May, there was a real increase on last year’s numbers.”
Two major permits issued in May accounted for more than $10 million in value. Vicano Developments Limited received a permit for $5.6 million to construct a shell building in Arlington Commons on Rest Acres Road. Later, the building will be fitted for tenants, requiring further permits. And the county got a $5.1-million permit to build a water tower near the Brant Sports Complex, where Hwy. 24 and Powerline Road intersect.
“There’s no sign it’s going to slow,” said Weidhaas. “We’re just watching out for supply shortages.”
Here are some of the other major permits issued in the first five months of the year:
• A $3.1-million permit in February for further expansion at Stubbe’s Precast Concrete in Harley;
• A $1.3-million permit in April for an above-grade addition on Adi Dassler Way for an industrial building owned by Grandezza Investments Two Inc.;
• Two permits issued to Sacred Heart Church on Washington Street in Paris where a foundation and then above-grade addition is creating a new fellowship hall for about $1.2 million;
• A$1-million permit for a shell building on Folsetter Drive that will be leased or sold when completed;
• A $1-million permit in April to Enes Holdings for a shell building for Brant Overhead Door at 677 Colborne St. W.;
• A $740,000 permit to CRH Canada Group for a new office building at the Dufferin Aggregates property on Watts Pond Road;
• And $435,000 permit to Vicano for interior work for Taco Bell restaurant at 185 Pinehurst Rd.
