It is not clear how many children go to school without a well-filled lunchbox. According to the Poverty Coalition, 15.7% of children in Utrecht grow up in low-income families. That translates to four to five children per class. This average is unevenly distributed across the city. Poverty is least common in Leidsche Rijn and in Overvecht, for example, more than five children per class will have financial difficulties at home. The Poverty Coalition strongly applauds the initiative, but they believe that the government should adjust the minimum income so that it is sufficient.
