“Young children also really need to learn how to use such a thing,” she says. “We want to help children with that too. Sometimes it is necessary to explain what you can say on apps like WhatsApp, and how certain things can come across. We certainly pay attention to that.” The school is certainly not anti-technology, says Willems. “We also use laptops, but we use them consciously. Children remember things better by writing them down, research shows. So for our new arithmetic method we consciously chose paper.”
