“No longer playable even with a disc”

The Crew has been running on Steam since 2014. From April 2024, however, this will be over: Ubisoft will close the servers and the pure online game will no longer be available for purchase on Steam. Fans are angry, but already have a solution: the offline mode is already in the game and just needs to be activated.

What kind of game is this?

  • The Crew was released on December 2, 2014 and is an MMO racing game. In a 5,000 km² world you can drive around with your own cars and other players.
  • You can either drive in street races against others or stand on the side of the law as a police officer.
  • There has been a successor, The Crew 2, since 2018, but it received mixed reviews in the test.
  • This is now Ubisoft’s decision: In a message, Ubisoft announces that The Crew will no longer be sold with immediate effect. It disappears from all shops. The notice can now be found on The Crew’s official Steam page.

The Crew will still be playable until March 31, 2024. From then on, the servers will be switched off and there will no longer be access to the game – even if you have bought the game. The Crew is ending due to “upcoming server infrastructure” and “license restrictions […] inevitable.”

Instead, they want to focus on further developing The Crew 2 and The Crew Motorfest. Ubisoft shows again and again that their great strength lies in service games that are supported for years. The end of The Crew hits many fans and causes anger among gamers.

Another reason why online live service games NEVER work

News of The Crew’s end quickly found its way onto Reddit, where dozens of users were chatting. There are mainly complaints about the practice whereby a game that has been purchased can simply be taken away from players.

This is particularly a problem with games that are 100% online – although, as in the case of The Crew, most of them can be played solo. You can still play other games, even if they are no longer sold.

With The Crew that wouldn’t even work anymore, even if you had a CD – simply because there are no servers anymore. Now fans are looking for alternatives and end up with Forza, Project CARS and Burnout, although most of the titles are also several years old.

However, with the foresight, a few users have already dealt with the “inevitable end” of The Crew (via Steam). They say: there is already an offline mode in the game’s code. You just have to get there somehow.

A small group of users are already trying to somehow crack the mode and publish it as a fan patch. It remains to be seen whether this will work before the servers end.

However, another game on Steam is currently struggling with significantly more problems:
