Raising three or more children can trigger the onset of cognitive decline or dementia later in life, according to new research by Columbia’s Center on Aging/Mailman School of Public Health and the University of Paris-Dauphne.
The scientists found that having three or more children versus two had a “negative effect on cognition in advanced age,” which is equivalent to being 6.2 years older.
CONCERNS AND UNCERTAINTY PLAY GREAT ROLE
The study said additional children incur significantly more financial costs for their parents, thereby lowering the family’s income and standard of living, causing concerns and uncertainties that can contribute to cognitive impairment.
Cognitive decline among elderly parents raising three or more children in Europe compared with those raising two children was analyzed. The worst results for cognitive loss came from northern European countries such as Denmark and Sweden.
