The political stalemate in the Netherlands remains for far-right politician Geert Wilders and his PVV party, which is being asked to form a government. One of the possible partners in a new government, the newly formed conservative party NSC, dropped out of talks with Wilder’s party on Tuesday.
The announcement was made by the party leader in the NSC, Pieter Omtzigt.
“Incredibly disappointing. The Netherlands wants this government and now Omtzigt is throwing in the towel even though we were still in talks today. I don’t understand anything,” writes Wilders on X.
Omtzigt explained the defection by saying that he gained insight into how the Dutch state’s finances look, which “shocked” him.
“Under these circumstances, the NSC cannot promise anything to the Dutch people that the party knows in advance cannot be implemented,” announces Omtzigt on X.
The parliamentary elections in the Netherlands were held on November 22, 2023, and then the xenophobic right-wing politician Wilder’s party unexpectedly received many votes.
