After many ifs and buts, the party comrades will decide the fate of Boris Johnson.
A vote of no confidence in Britain’s Prime Minister will take place on Monday.
A vote among Conservatives (Tories) MPs on the scandal-ridden Prime Minister has been reported to be close on several occasions. Now enough – 54 of the total 359 members – have formally requested that one be held, announces the chairman of the so-called 1922 committee, which coordinates the party’s parliamentary work.
The vote will take place between 6 and 8 pm local time (7 pm and 9 pm Swedish time), according to a press release from the committee’s chairman Sir Graham Brady. The votes will be counted as soon as everyone has cast.
If more than half of the Tory members vote against Boris Johnson, he will be replaced as both party chairman and the country’s prime minister. If he wins, he will avoid the threat of new no-confidence votes for at least a year.
Almost two weeks ago, the report was announced in an investigation into the so-called “partygate” scandal, where it has been revealed how various gatherings and festivities were arranged on 10 Downing Street during a time when the British population was expected to remain isolated in their homes.
What happened was unacceptable and top management “must be held accountable for this culture,” investigator Sue Gray wrote in the report.
Britain goes to the polls next time in 2025.
