While the provincial directive requiring masks inside hospitals is set to expire Saturday, the Brantford Community Healthcare System is keeping its mask mandate in place.
“As a hospital, we are entrusted with the care of patients and their families when they are at the most vulnerable,” the BCHS said in a statement issued Friday.
“In alignment with our regional health-care partners, and in the interest of ensuring that our patients are receiving care in the safest possible environment, Brant Community Healthcare System will not be lifting masking requirements for staff, medical staff, volunteers, patients, or visitor.”
The BCHS operates Brantford General Hospital and the Willett Hospital in Paris.
The BCHS said anyone visiting BGH or the Willett will receive a hospital-approved mask upon arrival and will be asked to self-screen for COVID-19 symptoms.
“These measures will remain in place for the foreseeable future as we continue to navigate the evolving COVID-19 pandemic.”
The BCHS noted that hospitals have the authority to keep requirements in place to support health and safety in their environments.
“Our priority continues to be the wellbeing of our patients, visitors, staff, and medical staff. We thank our community for their ongoing support and co-operation.”
In a statement released Wednesday, Ontario Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Kieran Moore announced that “most of the province’s remaining provincial masking requirements, including on public transit, will expire as of 12 am on June 11.” While directives in most health-care settings, such as hospitals will be revoked at that time, mask mandates will remain in place for long-term care settings and retirement homes.
