No action yet from the municipality of Utrecht against squatters

The demolition has been resisted for years, including by the PvdA, which thinks it is a shame that good social housing houses are being demolished. But the residents and the PvdA lost the battle, the houses are gone. But before that happens, the current residents must first get a new place, partly on the other side of the Croeselaan in Ondaatje, a neighborhood that still has to be built. But in the meantime, houses are already empty, to the anger of the squatters and to the sadness of the PvdA. “The problem that the PvdA sees is that there is vacancy. There are homes here that have been empty for more than six months,” says party chairman Rick van der Zweth. “At a time when a lot of people are looking for an affordable home and can’t find it. If you don’t want squatting, you have to make sure those homes aren’t empty.” The PvdA therefore understands that the squatters have taken the homes into use.
