At the end of 2018, both provinces decided to widen the Rhine Bridge from two to four lanes. But for a long time there was a fight about money. The total costs of the widening were initially estimated at 81 million euros. Later another 60 million was added. The province of Gelderland then pulled the plug on the planned widening. After the government contributed 40 million euros and both provinces also deposited an additional 10 million euros, the expansion came one step closer.
