At the current time (June 2022) there are a total of three different switch consoles from Nintendo:

  • Nintendo released the first Nintendo Switch model in March 2017 and it was a huge success.

  • In July 2021, Nintendo released the Switch OLED as the last console to date with a new display.

    What do the devices have in common? Nintendo has adjusted a few things with the OLED version, but much remains the same. So you can use the same game modes with both devices. You can use both switch models in the handheld or on the television.

    The screen resolution has also remained the same: you can use an HD resolution (720p) in handheld mode, and Full HD (1080p) is possible in docking mode.

    Nvidia’s Tegra processor is also installed in both devices. The OLED model does not have a better or faster processor installed than in the previous version. Nintendo also didn’t install a larger battery in the OLED version.

    You can play all Switch games on both models as there are no Switch OLED exclusives.

    Where are the differences? The Nintendo Switch OLED is a few millimeters larger than the normal version. Despite the larger display, the Switch hasn’t gotten much bigger. The OLED model is also slightly heavier at 320 grams than the regular model (297 grams). You probably won’t feel that in everyday life.

    Where are the differences? The normal Nintendo Switch uses a 6.2-inch LCD display. The OLED model uses the eponymous 7-inch OLED display. This is also the biggest difference between the consoles in a direct comparison. Both the regular Switch and the Switch OLED offer a maximum refresh rate of 60 Hz.

    Compared to the old LCD display, the OLED display has much stronger colors and better contrasts. You can also see what is happening on your display even in strong sunlight. In theory, there is a chance of burn-in damage with OLED displays, but you don’t have to worry too much about that.

    Which switch is better? Nintendo has mainly revised small things in the OLED version. These include the better and larger display, an improved rear stand, and larger internal storage, which now sits at 64GB.

    You can play all of Nintendo’s current top titles with both the Switch OLED and the normal Switch, as there are no exclusive titles for the OLED version.

    For whom is the OLED model worthwhile? If you already own a Nintendo Switch, then the upgrade should only be worthwhile to a limited extent. Because apart from a better display, there are no significant improvements. If you mainly want to gamble in handheld mode and don’t have a switch yet, then we would recommend the Switch OLED. The richer colors and above all the better lighting speak for it.

    Who should get the regular Nintendo Switch? If you mainly want to gamble in docking mode, then you should use the old model. You can now get the docking station with a LAN connection for around 50 euros and you can also use it on the old model. Depending on the offer, the price difference between the two consoles is around 80 euros.
