Nintendo shut down an online network for old consoles. But one player continued to bravely hold his ground. But now the last player had to go offline because his console crashed.
What kind of network was that? On April 9, 2024, Nintendo shut down the Nintendo Network. This was an online service that was launched in 2012. Thanks to the network, you could use an online mode in certain games on the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U.
With the shutdown, all games on the old consoles lost their online functionality. But one player was still online until recently when a crash put a stop to his plans.
Thanks to the patch, players will remain online for another 200 days until their console crashes
The English site TomsHardware.com reports that a player was still online until recently despite the closure. After all, more than 200 days after Nintendo officially closed the servers.
What was the trick behind it? The trick behind it was an unofficial patch that user Fishguy6564 used on his device. Because this patch prevented the game lobby from automatically closing. Continuous activity in the lobby was simulated by using bots that raced each other endlessly. This technical solution made it possible to maintain the server connection well beyond the official end.
In an interview with GamesRadar, he said at the start of his testing that he never believed it would even work. This is what he meant:
I didn’t think we would even survive the official shutdown. From that point on it was just a test to see how long we could keep this up.
What caused the end? The user’s Nintendo 3DS crashed because the device could no longer handle continuous operation. And that was how the lone user’s online match ended.
Another player also fought against Nintendo shutting down the servers and remained online. The player himself doesn’t really know why he’s still online and why Nintendo hasn’t kicked him off the servers a long time ago.
