The 29-year-old biathlete has not been able to do it in the World Cup this season. Bad results have led to consequences in the form of a World Cup match. Now Stina Nilsson instead has to focus on the EC, which starts on Wednesday in the Swiss Lenzerheide and lasts until Sunday.
— I think biathlon is fun regardless, and I have full respect for getting the team out on time and all the girls are really talented. The EC is very big for me anyway and I want to get good results.
— The withdrawal is clear. Four girls have been on the podium this season. It is perfectly reasonable that I will not go to the WC.
Four places were basically ready even before the WC selection. Elvira Öberg, Hanna Öberg, Anna Magnusson and Linn Persson are the ones who will chase the medals in the German Oberhof at the beginning of February.
There was still an open place, and Mona Brorsson finally took it.
— I knew what fifth place would have meant if I had gotten it. It definitely has a function to fill and a role that I can take. But now it didn’t happen like that and I’m very grateful that there is an EC for us who don’t go to the WC.
Stina Nilsson was selected in the Swedish squad for the 2022 Olympics. She also has a podium place in the World Cup from last year.
In the WC, the rules are clear. Each nation may field four riders in each race. Mona Brorsson, who is selected as a reserve, can drive in case someone gets sick. However, the men can drive with five riders. This is because Martin Ponsiluoma is the reigning world champion, which gives the team an extra place.
