Ice skater Nils van der Poel was awarded the Gold of Achievement on Tuesday for his efforts during the Olympics in Beijing 2022. The Swede was somewhat reserved in the subsequent interview – where he was asked, among other things, what he will replace sports with after his career.
What did he answer?
– Mainly with heroin, I think, says van der Poel.
Nils van der Poel took home the 98th Bragdguldet in a row when he was awarded the award on Tuesday. The skater made a big impression in the Swedish sports world, to say the least, when he made a big success during the Olympics in Beijing 2022.
Awarded the Achievement Gold
Among other things, the Swede broke his own world record in the 10,000 meters. Van der Poel also took home the Olympic gold in the 5000 meters after a huge upset against the Dutchman Patrick Roest. The Swede crossed the finish line 47 hundredths ahead of his competitor while also breaking a new Olympic record and giving Sweden its first Olympic gold in skating in 34 years.

“For Olympic feat, a legendary and ground-breaking career that put a golden edge on a classic Swedish parade event,” read the jury’s justification after the prize was awarded.
“Mainly with heroin”
When Nils van der Poel was interviewed by Svenska Dagbladet after receiving the Bragdguldet, he was somewhat reserved when talking about the past year.
– I don’t really know what to feel. I know about what I did in a way that very few others know about, he says.

Van der Poel is now retired from the sport – and was asked afterwards how he will occupy himself now that the skates will not take up as much space. Then it was an unexpected answer to say the least that came out of his mouth.
– Mainly with heroin, he replies, which causes the reporter to become completely speechless and lose his temper.
– I’ve been thinking for a month about what to say in this interview, I haven’t come up with anything clever that you might notice, says Nils van der Poel before bursting into laughter.
