During a campaign to raise awareness around climate change, Danish actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who is one of the project’s ambassadors, spoke to our editorial team about the education he instill in his daughters.
He became known for his roles on screen, notably that of Jaime Lannister in the successful saga Game Of Thronesbut for several years, the Danish actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, 53, is also being talked about for his ecological commitment. His latest project, as ambassador of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), is an innovative awareness campaign, to say the least, which was launched on March 21, 2024. Entitled “Children’s Weather”, in partnership with the World Meteorological Organization and The Weather Channel, it aims to warn about global warming.
For this, in more than 80 countries around the world, special one-minute weather flashes will be broadcast on television and presented by children. Viewers will see their local weather report… with alarmist forecasts for the year 2050 against a backdrop of heat waves, floods and droughts. These natural disasters already exist today, but they could increase in the years to come and affect, if we do nothing, future generations. For the editorial staff of Journal des Femmes, the actor indulged in some confidences, particularly about his family life.
A daily challenge taken up as a family
The star, who lives in the Hollywood Hills, is the father of two young daughters, Safina and Filippa, born from his union with Nukâka Motzfeldt, 53, former Miss Greenland. Together, they try every day to instill the ecological values they defend in their daughters. “Safina and Filippa are two young women that I am very proud of. Being a parent is a challenge for all of us, but they are incredible,” the actor tells us. This cause for the environment, or at least this “common sense for sustainability and the balance of the world” as Nikolaj likes to call it, each member of his family has become aware of this in recent years, and inevitably, they have made some changes in the way they live. “We try to be conscious, but we must strive to create a sustainable world together. Yes, we all have a responsibility, but we need our leaders to step up and make often difficult decisions,” underlines the actor.
Nikolaj Coster-Waldau: “I am full of hope for the future of our children”
Seeing these pessimistic forecasts emerging for the Earth and its inhabitants, more than one parent might fear for the future of their children, but Nikolaj Coster-Waldau prefers to be confident. “I am full of hope for the future of our children. I sincerely believe that we can meet these immense challenges. I believe in man. And even, I am convinced that we will see in my lifetime significant reductions in CO2 emissions, pollution and restoration of biodiversity”, he admits to us before concluding: “The next generation is counting on us… because tomorrow’s future depends on today’s actions.”
