Nikki Haley in a storm – did not mention slavery

Republican presidential hopeful Nikki Haley did not mention slavery as one of the reasons for the American Civil War, reports ABC.
Now she is met with massive criticism and is forced to clarify her claim in a radio interview.

Republican Nikki Haley is running to become a presidential candidate in the United States. At a campaign rally in New Hampshire, she was asked a question about what sparked the American Civil War. She did not give a straight answer to the question but turned the question back to the person who asked it.

– What do you think was the reason? she replied. She then reasoned that the war was about the role of the state.

Her answer has attracted attention as slavery is usually pointed out as the main reason why the American Civil War started, reports ABC. Nikki Haley is the former governor of South Carolina – one of the states that started the war by refusing to abolish slavery.

“Amazing”

The person who asked Haley the question said it was “amazing” that she gave an answer that did not mention slavery.

– What do you want me to say about slavery? Haley replied. She then moved on to the next question.

The responses have met with massive criticism and President Joe Biden has spoken out.

“It was about slavery,” he writes X.

The harsh criticism has prompted Nikki Haley to clarify her reasoning.

– Of course the civil war was about slavery. We know that. That’s the easy part, she said during an interview, reports Washington Post.
