The Comoros government announces a nightly curfew after the country’s security forces clashed with regime critics. Unrest in the island nation, located between Mozambique and Madagascar, has erupted since President Azali Assoumani was re-elected.

The opposition accuses the regime of, among other things, electoral fraud in the country, which has around 820,000 inhabitants.

The state of emergency was announced on national television by Youssoufa Mohamed Ali, who is the president’s defense affairs officer.

President Assoumani was elected to a fourth term in the January 13 election. The 65-year-old president has also held the rotating presidency of the African Union (AU) for the last term. But at home, many in the opposition called for a boycott of the election. The last election in 2019 was not considered to have been conducted correctly according to, among others, the AU.
