Niger and Burkina Faso announce their withdrawal from the G5

This decision by the two countries to leave the G5-Sahel force is not a surprise. Last September, after the signing of a defense charter for the alliance of Sahel states made up of Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso, observers noted that the team was moving further away from the G5 Sahel force. reduced today to its two pillars: Chad and Mauritania.

And to announce their departure from the organization, Niger and Burkina Faso use the same rhetoric as their ally Mali, which already slammed the door of this sub-regional anti-terrorist force in May 2022: the ineffectiveness of the organization nine years after its creation, specifies the joint press release which adds “ its exploitation from the outside “.

The G5 Sahel did not have real means on the ground to combat terrorism. The five countries that initially made up the force were never able to mobilize the troops announced. For its part, the international community has never wanted to give the force the real means and robust mandate that it requested.
