Nickmercs receives his first ban from Twitch for one word – He shows no insight

Streamer Nick “Nickmercs” Kolcheff has received his first ban from Twitch. He was banned for using a transphobic slur. He even upped the ante in his commentary on the stream. Apparently his career on Twitch is no longer as important to him since he signed a million-dollar contract with Kick.

This is what the streamer says about his ban: Nickmercs tweeted on June 28 (via kotaku):

Got banned from Twitch for using the word “tranny”. Apparently it’s a derogatory term. That was my mistake. Next time I’ll say mental illness.

It is not known how long the ban will last. Twitch is no longer as crucial to Nickmercs as it once was since he started streaming regularly on rival platform Kick, where he signed a one-year deal at the end of 2023 that reportedly guarantees him $10 million (via sbj).

The tweet has since been deleted after receiving mostly negative reactions.

The English term “tranny” has been considered a derogatory term since 2017 and is blocked by Facebook, for example, according to their anti-hate guidelines (via wired). Before that, there had been movements in the trans community to use the term as a self-description. But that didn’t catch on.

Nickmercs’ comment makes it clear that he used the term in a clearly derogatory manner.

Nickmercs is becoming increasingly radicalised on the subject of trans

This is the backstory: Nickmercs had not attracted any negative attention for years, but in June 2023, Pride Month, he made derogatory comments about a pro-LGBTQ demonstration in front of a school.

He had said that they should leave “little children alone.” By this he meant that the state should not confront children with LGBTQ issues; that should be left to the parents.

His statement “leave little children alone” caused Activision Blizzard to distance itself from him and remove a skin pack from Call of Duty. Nickmercs was the leading streamer for CoD Warzone at the time.

This exclusion from Call of Duty at the time has apparently led, as streamer Asmongold suspects, to Nickmercs becoming increasingly radicalized and now, for Pride Month 2024, making transphobic statements more consciously and more blatantly than he did a year ago.

While his original statements about leaving the confrontation of children with “LGBTQ” to the parents were controversial but shared by many, he has received a lot of public rejection for his more recent, blatant statements on the subject.

What was last known about Nickmercs? Nickmercs had initially shown solidarity with DrDisrespect and supported him against accusations.

But as more details about the incident came to light, Nickmercs distanced himself from his friend and said he could no longer defend or support DrDisrespect: New report answers 5 unresolved questions about the DrDisrespect Twitch scandal
