Nicaragua bans the Red Cross

The Red Cross is accused of “attacking peace and stability” during an anti-government demonstration in 2018. The organization says it only helped injured protesters.

The new law also gives the authorities the right to confiscate Red Cross assets in the country.

The Red Cross is just the latest in a long line of organizations banned or shut down by the government. They have in common that Ortega accused them of collaborating with foreign interests to overthrow him.

President Daniel Ortega has now ordered the Ministry of Health to form an alternative Nicaraguan “Red Cross”.
