An annual event at Kingston Park helped launch the first Taste of Chatham-Kent celebration this weekend.

Adult Language and Learning hosted its Newcomer Picnic in the Park on Saturday, which drew about 150 people.
The Chatham-based organization offers a variety of settlement services, language training and employment assistance to help people adjust to life in Canada.
Magdiel Hoste, settlement services co-ordinator, said they were looking forward to seeing clients and their families.
“(It’s) raising awareness about what our organization does,” she said. “And making sure they get all the services that they need in our community.”
Saturday’s picnic featured lunch, games and prizes. Families could also take part in different crafts.
Charles Costa and his daughter, Larissa, 8, were on hand to enjoy the festivities.

Originally from Brazil, they’ve been in Chatham for a year and a half.
“It’s a wonderful city,” he said, noting the people in the community are friendly. Costa also credited his English instructors for their support during his time here.
Adult Language and Learning has served the Chatham-Kent area since 1984, funded by the province through the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities and the federal government through the Department of Citizenship and Immigration.
Last week, Taste of Chatham-Kent organizers held an official launch at the Chatham Portuguese Club, with the goal of putting the community’s cultural diversity on display over the next two months.
The celebration runs through Sept. 30 across the municipality. Some of the confirmed events include the Chatham-Kent International Food Festival, Aug. 16 to 18; the CK World Cup Soccer Tournament on Aug. 24; the Roots & Riddim Festival on Sept. 7 and the Onam Harvest Festival, also on Sept. 7.
