The downpour in New York is officially the worst since 1948. On Friday, the city’s sewer system was overwhelmed by the rain, and water gushed into schools, subway stations and basements, CNN reports.
– This needs to be taken extremely seriously. The state is here to help, and we’ll get through this together, as we always do, said New York Governor Kathy Hochul.
A state of emergency has been declared. Gov. Kathy Hochul urged New Yorkers to stay home if at all possible during a press conference on Friday.
– Plan your escape route. Don’t wait to go until the water is above your knees, don’t wait until it’s too late, she says.
The mayor: “It’s not over”
Nearly two inches of rain has fallen on the Brooklyn borough so far, according to the National Weather Service, and more rain is expected.
“This is dangerous weather, and it’s not over,” said New York City Mayor Eric Adams.
The rainfall is expected to affect approximately 25 million people across the northeastern United States.
