New World wants to make fans happy with a new feature, but they are disappointed with the implementation

Today, August 21st, the new transmog system will be brought into play in New World. You can use this to transfer collected skins to your current equipment for free. But there is a catch, which has now become clear in the FAQ.

How does transmog work? After the update, you can unlock any armor or weapon skin that you have in your inventory or bank for the system. You need a transmog token for each.

Once registered, you can change the appearance of your gear with an outfit NPC at any time. This is in every large settlement and the change costs you nothing.

What is the problem then? The transmog tokens are not well received. You can get them for free by opening elite chests in-game or by progressing through the Battle Pass. However, only in very small numbers:

  • You only get one token per week from the chests! And that with a drop probability of 1%.
  • Even through the free Battle Pass, there are only 3 brands in total – at levels 15, 50, and 100.
  • As an alternative, there are brands for real money, but even there the prices are simply too expensive for many.

Here you get the transmog system explained again in the video:

Thousands of skins, but far too few brands

Is that really such a big problem? Players want transmog so they can customize their appearance to their liking without sacrificing perfect stats. But if you would like to collect all the skins in the game, you have a big problem.

Unlike in Guild Wars 2, for example, the collected skins are not automatically unlocked, but must be activated with the brand. If you don’t activate it, but sell or destroy the item, you first have to find it again if you want to have the appearance later.

Now there are over 200 different skins for each weapon alone. With 14 different weapons and three different armor types, there are thousands of items in the game. According to the NWDB, a total of 17,461.

And you can’t keep them all in the bank.

Playfully, even with the regular new Battle Pass, it would take over 200 years to activate everything. Or you pay real money:

  • The most expensive package brings 50,000 lucky stamps for 41.99 euros.
  • For 50,000 lucky tokens you get 25 transmog tokens.
  • Unlocking all the skins would cost over 29,000 euros.
  • How is the system received? Not good. The system is repeatedly referred to as “dogshit”. Both the pure number and the fact that PvP players and dungeon fans are completely left out are criticized.

Do other MMORPGs do it better? Yes, there are a number of titles where the wardrobe is free or costs in-game currency, such as WoW or the new Palia.

Guild Wars 2, on the other hand, lets you register all skins for free, but wants transmutation crystals for the change. These are available both in-game and for real money.

The difference here, however, is that you have to rein in your frenzy of change rather than storing the skins. In addition, gold can always be exchanged for real-money currency in GW2, so that you can farm new crystals in dozens of ways.

What are your thoughts on New World’s transmog system? Is the criticism of the fans justified?

By the way, New World is supposed to get its first expansion in the fall. Two new updates are also planned: MMORPG New World will bring new seasons, an expansion and mounts in 2023 – sounds absolutely great
