On December 17, 2021, a new law entered into force. The Whistleblower Act, as it is called, is based on the EU’s whistleblower directive, writes Fortnight.
A former whistleblower team has existed in Sweden. The new whistleblower law is an extension of this. Before, it contained eleven paragraphs, and now as many as 60 paragraphs. The purpose is to prevent corruption and violations of the law in the workplace and to offer protection to those who report such.
This applies as of December 17, 2023
In connection with the new law, companies must establish a special system for reporting crime and corruption and take action when information from whistleblowers comes to light. The identity of the whistleblower must also be kept secret to make it easier for employees to report wrongdoing in the workplace.
Depending on the number of employees, a reporting channel must have been established within a certain time between six months and two years after the law was instituted. Companies with at least 50 employees must have established an internal whistleblowing reporting channel by 17 December 2023. For companies with at least 250 employees, the deadline for the completed reporting channel was 17 July 2022.
