New Western epic massively disappoints in the cinema but there

With the Horizon saga, Kevin Costner, as director and lead actor, is bringing his life’s work to the cinema. The star has not only given up his hit series Yellowstone for it, but is also planning a multi-part western epic for which he is digging deep into his own pockets.

In the USA, the first part of the Horizon series has already started and the Box office number after the first weekend is devastating. Nevertheless, Costner can hold on to his dream for now.

Kevin Costner’s Horizon made far too little money over its opening weekend

As Variety reports, Horizon played in 3,334 US theaters on its first weekend total of 11 million dollars Since the first two westerns together have a budget of 100 million dollars, this figure is more than sobering. Even if you estimate the budget for the first part at around 50 million dollars, the amount earned so far is far from a positive result.

Since Costner says he has invested $39 million of his own fortune in the Western project, part 2 has already been shot and filming for a third part has already begun, Horizon at least not a temporarily burned project. Fans of the director and classic westerns should enjoy around eight to nine hours of genre entertainment.

When will Horizon be released in German cinemas?

In Germany, the first part of Costner’s Western saga will be shown from 22 August 2024 on the big screen. Part 2 will follow on November 7th. The third part will not be released until 2025 at the earliest, perhaps not until 2026.

Moviepilot editor-in-chief Jenny Jecke has already seen the first Horizon part at the Cannes Film Festival and wrote very positively:

The script is based on classic Western characters, but even the smallest roles remain Space to fill the clichés with life. 181 minutes of running time really pay off here. That’s why Horizon already feels like three or four westerns in one. So many perspectives are juxtaposed and examined that the three hours fly by.
